Igloo Recalls Over 1.2 Million Coolers Due to Finger Injuries
Orthopedic hand specialist Brandon P. Donnelly, MD, is raising awareness following the recall of more than 1.2 million Igloo 90 Quart Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), these coolers pose a serious fingertip amputation and crushing hazard. The design flaw involves the tow handle, which can pinch fingers against the cooler body during use.
The Impact of Cooler Hand Injuries
The recall was prompted by 78 reported injuries, including 26 cases of fingertip amputations, fractures, and lacerations. These are not minor injuries. “Fingertip injuries can be devastating,” said Dr. Donnelly. “People don’t realize how much they rely on fine motor skills until they lose them. A fingertip amputation can mean months of recovery, permanent sensitivity issues, or loss of function.”
The coolers were sold at major retailers—including Costco, Target, Amazon, and Dick’s Sporting Goods—from January 2019 through January 2025, retailing between $80 and $140. Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled coolers immediately and contact Igloo Products Corp. for a free replacement handle.
Protect Your Hands
The Consumer Federation of America noted, “Product recalls like this are critical to prevent avoidable injuries. Crush and amputation injuries can have life-long impacts on mobility and quality of life.”
Dr. Donnelly emphasizes the importance of vigilance. “In South Louisiana, we all rely on coolers. They’re part of our lifestyle. But no one should risk permanent hand injury from an everyday product. Check your cooler, share this information, and stay safe.”
